Methodology for Regional Carbon, Energy, and Water Factors

Greenpixie's regional factors methodology produces the carbon, energy and water factors that determine the impact of running a workload in one cloud region rather than another, at hourly resolution for grid carbon intensity.

The factors cover the electricity grids serving public cloud regions on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, built from the generation and intensity data that grid operators, market bodies, national inventories and modelled national datasets publish. The methodology also carries the data centre energy overhead each cloud provider publishes for its own estates or, where none is published, a value Greenpixie assigns. It carries a water stress category for the location of each cloud region as well.

The companion [Cloud methodology](/methodology/cloud) and [AI methodology](/methodology/ai) apply these factors. Those documents describe how the factors combine with energy figures to produce emissions.
