What is GreenOps?

Also known as Green Operations

GreenOps is the practice of putting energy, carbon and water data next to cost and performance in everyday cloud and AI decisions.

Why it matters

GreenOps brings sustainability into choices that engineering, DevOps, FinOps and sustainability teams already make, such as which instance, region or AI model to use. Teams see the energy use, carbon emissions and water use of each workload at the same level of detail as its cost, instead of in a yearly report nobody can act on.

FinOps and GreenOps overlap more than they differ. Most cloud waste costs money and produces emissions, so removing it helps both, and GreenOps follows the same Inform, Optimise and Operate phases as the FinOps Framework. Carbon data also gives teams a second reason to act on optimisations that cost savings alone have not pushed through. As AI use grows, it helps keep cloud carbon within targets an organisation has already set.

An example

A rightsizing recommendation arrives with a carbon figure as well as a cost saving. An AI model is compared on accuracy, latency, price and energy before a team picks it. A migration plan is checked against the organisation's climate targets before anything moves. Each time, the team makes the decision it was already making, with one more set of figures in front of it.

How Greenpixie measures it

Greenpixie supports GreenOps by adding energy, carbon and water figures to every line of a cloud bill and every AI model call:

  • GPX Cloud for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud usage, at SKU level
  • GPX AI for over 500 AI models
  • one published methodology across all three cloud providers
  • data delivered into tools teams already use, such as FinOps platforms or a data warehouse

Because the figures sit on the same line items as cost, they can be grouped by the same services, regions, teams and business units.
